Chennai climate

When I first arrived at Chennai on the first of May it was the beginning of the “agni Nathchatiram” aka heat wave. Officially the heat wave ended a week ago but there was not a distinctive change the Chennai heat. Each afternoon when I come out of my institute for lunch I would be greeted by gusts of hot air coming from streets. But I didn’t experience this heat in my uncle’s place in Pondicherry and Sirkali, even during the heat wave the other parts of India was relatively cooler then Chennai (just my observation.)
Why is Chennai so hot?
Based on my observation, I would say it is the lack of trees. In the village areas there are more trees then houses. Every house has a few mango trees and some other trees to provide shade. But in Chennai were the price of land is very high, it is more economical for the landlords to rent out the little piece of land they had to tea stalls rather than to plant a tree which would pay no rent. The buildings get heated and they themselves radiate heat. The wind that flows through the buildings is converted to waves of heat.
Due to the busy life in Chennai no one got the time to plant trees and maintain them. The government cannot just stop at instructing their people to plant trees, they should take the matter in their own hands. First they should convert the little bush they have on the road dividers to trees. How much difference is the little bush gonna make in beautifying the roads?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my blogging friend Shalini for aiding me with information about Chennai. Your advice came at the time when I was in the verge of abandoning my Chennai trip. Thanks. Thanks to all my friends in HBFites (my institute) , for making me feel more at home and showing me around Chennai.
Minus the heat, Chennai is a fun place to live in. I will be attending the IndiBlogger bloggers meet in Chennai later and hope to make more friends. If you are attending please don’t feel shy to say hi to me!
